Hyatt Regency Minneapolis is part of an international hotel chain catering to business crowds, but its $25 million renovation, unveiled in 2012, includes surprisingly creative ways to feel Minnesotan.
The stone and wood decor with a generous lobby fireplace is a gimme, but look closely at the funky white textured wall art behind the registration islands. It’s made up entirely of white Post-It notes (a Minnesota invention) that flow like the Mississippi River they represent.
You can cozy up to the giant fireplace in the lobby with some seating made from massive logs or head upstairs to freshly renovated rooms with neutral colors and a sparse modern look. Some rooms—and the marketplace in the lobby—give a nod to Gold Medal Flour, a Minneapolis icon dating back to its days as the “Mill City,” an epicenter of grains for the world.
Rooms (all 533 of them) feature plush beds, granite countertops, desks and some of the best hotel views in the city.
The local theme continues in the Prairie Kitchen restaurant, which has built a menu around local ingredients, Scandinavian influences and the state's farming heritage. Anyone not up for a big meal or wanting to dine out can grab gourmet flatbread pizzas, grilled fruit cups, sandwiches, wild rice salad and other snacks at the Marketplace, which also promotes locally made products. Craving comfort food? There’s even a tator tot hot dish. It doesn’t get more Midwestern than that.
Rooms start at $99 during peak summer weekends, which seems like a total bargain.
