Midwest Living Review

A recently renovated Kimpton boutique hotel offers downtown luxury and the best hotel gym we've ever seen.

The recently renovated (2012) Grand Hotel in downtown Minneapolis lives up to the quality we've come to expect from Kimpton boutique hotels (including downtown Chicago's Monaco). The lobby, tucked behind massive wooden doors opened by doormen, is a cozy, classy space featuring several sitting areas, a bar and a hip fireplace stretching in a low, long line between illuminated sculptures. Sharply dressed staff members stand by at the desk and serve wine each evening. Off the lobby are the Rare Steak and Sushi restaurant and a full-service spa. Rooms are modern and well-appointed, with large flat-screen TVs and comfortable chairs at the desks. Our room featured historic photos from Minneapolis and a framed letter discussing shipment of a cornerstone for a downtown building in the early 1900s. The Grand's biggest star, to our fitness-minded reviewer, is the athletic club, which is hands-down the best hotel gym we've seen. It features an elevated track, an army of cardio machines and strength-training options, a lap pool and squash courts. We had only a few quibbles with the Grand. Our room in mid-February cost $305/night, and for that we expect free Wi-Fi, not a $9.95 charge (joining Kimpton's rewards program grants freebie Wi-Fi at any Kimpton property). And the valet parking booth is around the corner from the hotel's entrance -- a definite drawback in a Minnesota winter.
