Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
A spacious chain hotel across the street from the Mall of America offers a comfortable stay and friendly service.

Location sells the 146-room, six-story property across from the former Bloomingdale anchor store at Mall of America, but you'll enjoy more than that here. A friendly front desk staff, a lobby with a gas fireplace, the scent of apple-cinnamon tea filling the air, and cookie jars stuffed with chocolate chip and snickerdoodles all contribute to a warm stay. The king suites offer a living room with a serviceable couch, easy chair, desk and comfortable swiveling chair. Five soft pillows line the headboard on the soft king bed, decked with white linens and a red spread, and you'll find extra pillows and blankets in the closet. A granite counter surrounds the bathroom sink, and you'll find 32-inch flat-screen TVs in the living room and in the bedroom. Each room comes with a microwave, small refrigerator, coffeemaker, complimentary newspapers (both the "Minneapolis Star-Tribune" and "USA Today") and a hair dryer. Another perk: a complimentary breakfast buffet, with a mix of hot and cold options that change daily, such as waffles, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and French toast. Cereal, oatmeal, pastries and fresh-cut fruit round out the mix. "Hot" is probably too liberally applied to the breakfast options, though we found that heating them up in the microwave solved that particular problem. Overall, the hotel is a solid option for travelers looking to spend time at the Mall of America or travel downtown on the light-rail system that stops across the street and ends at the new home of Major League Baseball's Twins, Target Field. (Be aware that the hotel regularly sells out during Twins' and Vikings games, and guests also can get room service from the TGIFridays and the IHOP next door.) Rates from $155.
