Affordable van tours offer a three-hour cultural encounter, with farm-fresh foods and handmade goods to boot.

Bluffscape Amish Tours offers a comfortable way to get a sneak peek inside the lives of these reclusive people living in the hinterlands of southeastern Minnesota. Three-hour tours ($30 for adults, April to October) are conducted in an air-conditioned van or minibus. Knowledgeable and friendly guides tell the story of how the Amish people came to America and to this part of Minnesota, and how their Old Order sect follows the most rigorous codes of conduct. Tours stop at five or six farms, where tourists can chat with a member of the resident Amish family and purchase goods, such as pickled foods, fresh-baked breads and pastries, woven baskets, leather goods, and handmade wooden furniture. (No photographs are allowed, out of respect for the Amish families' privacy and beliefs.) Bluffscape Amish Tours are kid-friendly, making for a wonderful cultural learning experience for children. But anyone will be fascinated to learn about the old-world lives being lead by these strictly religious, Germanic-speaking farm families.
