Midwest Living Review

Trevor Meers
A full-scale Viking ship and church star at this local history museum.

This local history museum gets a leg up on most of the genre by hosting the results of a couple of local guys with an outsized sense of what makes a good hobby. The centerpiece of the museum (pronounced “YEM-komst”) is a full-size Viking ship made by local guidance counselor Robert Asp. Outside stands a full-size Viking church built by local scientist Guy Paulson. Each is not only a marvelous chance to study pieces of Norway in person but also an opportunity to see just how tremendous the results can be when average folks devote themselves to a cause with great skill and passion. The church, in particular, has become something of a pilgrimage destination for both Americans of Norwegian descent and actual Norwegians on holiday. The rest of the Hjemkomst holds a fairly standard-issue lineup of area history items, but the story is told well through details like maps showing the ethnic roots of settlers along the Red River in the 1800s (guess what country dominates?). Special exhibits include gems like the artwork of a local woman whose brilliance wasn’t really discovered until after her death.
