Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
Come here for black-diamond thrills, family-friendly tubing, cross-country treks through hushed woods or close to 2,000 miles of revved-up snowmobiling.

Downhill skiers and boarders can find 35 runs -- from easy slopes to exhilarating terrain -- overlooking the wilderness, lakes and reclaimed mining pits surrounding Giant's Ridge, the largest resort on Minnesota's Iron Range. A folk art painting above the chalet's counter tells the tale of Mesabi, a giant whose sleeping body beneath the earth formed the hills of the Great Laurentian Divide. The ski area climbs 500 feet with runs snaking through hardwoods and pines. Families and beginners can join classes or start on the easiest hills with a J-bar or magic carpet ride. Then grab a chair lift and head up the ridge for a variety of terrain and sweeping views of Minnesota's Iron Range. It's especially beautiful on a freshly frosted morning. Many visitors skip the lifts and head onto the 70 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails, some of which traverse the resort's two lauded golf courses, The Quarry and The Legend. Giant's Ridge's northern location and snowmaking equipment make it one of the most dependable Nordic ski destinations in the state. Tubing runs, which opened in 2011, offer another option for family fun. With on-site lodging at both Giant's Ridge Lodge or Giant's Ridge Villas, it's easy to stay put, kick back and choose your speed for winter fun.
