Function and fashion merge in this shoe store of the North.
Mukluk boots provide the warmth needed for an Arctic expedition but with a fashionable feel. Mukluks came about in the 1980s when then wife of polar explorer Will Steger discovered the quality of Northern Cree Indian-style boots. The boots weigh about half what traditional winter boots do and are mainly made from moose hide. The company makes about 14,000 pairs of boots per year right in Ely. Many are sold at the flagship storefront on Sheridan Street. The store is sparsely furnished and sells almost exclusively Mukluk brand items, including moccasins and mittens. Be warned, you'll pay for the style and quality -- a pair of boots runs between $150 and $300.
