Midwest Living Review

This rustic, recreational getaway provides everything needed to disconnect from the world.

Silver Rapids Lodge is a full-service lodge perched on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Visitors have the option of staying in the main lodge or renting one of the dozen cabins lining the shore. The smallest cabin holds four, while the "retreat" cabin holds 28 and includes access to 40 acres of woods and 1,000 feet of private shoreline. The accommodations are rustic at best. Everything works but hasn't been updated recently. Though they have working kitchens and grills, most cabins are not equipped with phones, televisions or Internet. The mattresses could stand to be replaced, and the bedspreads have seen better days. With that said, perched on a comfy couch by a roaring fireplace, overlooking the pristine woods bordering the Boundary Waters, you can't help but love it here. The lodge includes a bar and restaurant that overlooks the property's four-lake chain. During our winter visit, the crowd was mainly snowmobilers, but during the summer, it is easy to imagine a lot of families spending their vacations here. There's a swimming beach, campground, playground and plenty of fire pits, plus a full service marina that rents boats, canoes and fishing gear. With so much to do outside, it becomes really easy to overlook the dated decor.
