Midwest Living Review
Piragis features high-end practical outdoor clothes and gear, along with regionally made gifts. The store is large and broken into several sections. Up front, there are plenty of socks, hats, gloves and other basics, plus clothing areas for both men and women. In the back half of the store, the focus is on gear -- high-end sleeping bags, tents, canoes and cooking gear. Keep looking, and you'll find a space filled with regional pottery and other local artistic items. Upstairs is an independent book store with comfy rocking chairs for kicking back and relaxing. The store is well laid out and clean. Exposed timbers and wooden siding provide that North Woods rustic feel you'd expect at an outfitter in Ely. Piragis is known in the area for premiere trail guides as well. Flipping through their catalog, you'll see they offer a number of different wilderness experiences in the Boundary Waters and elsewhere. The trips are expensive, but you get what you pay for.
