Midwest Living Review
Grand Ely Lodge overlooks Shagawa Lake in Ely. The lake is lovely and provides a great recreational and wilderness backdrop for this modern resort. Inside, nice touches include wilderness prints by local "National Geographic" photographer Jim Brandenburg and a fireplace in the lobby. The rooms feature timber-framed beds, end tables and other log-style furniture. Rustic doesn't mean uncomfortable, though. The rooms include free Wi-Fi, plush mattresses, extra pillows and thick comforters, satellite television and spacious bathrooms. Most rooms facing the lake have either private walk-out patios or personal decks overlooking woods and water. In warmer months, an on-site marina offers free fishing equipment, kayaks, canoes and paddleboats. Or, you can rent a pontoon or fishing boat. The four-season resort also has an indoor pool, hot tub, fitness center, and bar and restaurant featuring hearty (if not particularly memorable) American-style cuisine in a casual atmosphere.
