Midwest Living Review

Now playing in Duluth: Dinner, drinks and a show under one roof!

Zeitgeist Arts is the newest addition to Duluth's arts scene. The renovated building in the old downtown hosts a black box theater, independent movie theater and creative cafe all under one roof. Zeitgeist Arts Cafe is simply decorated, keeping the focus on preparing artful concoctions that are appealing to your eye and stomach. Comfort foods with a twist include an extra cheesy, gourmet macaroni and cheese baked with bread crumbs or a half-pound bison burger topped with stilton cheese and home made fries. The cafe is still pleasing to the North Woods palette featuring smoked fish and the standard whitefish sandwich; but it also features coconut curry, smoked gouda stuffed dates wrapped in bacon and creative salads providing a diverse dining experience. For dessert, we loved the artful presentation of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and a cold glass of milk. Zeitgeist also houses Duluth's first -- and only -- independent movie theater, Zinema 2. It features two newly designed stadium-style seating rooms with plush reclining chairs. In addition to standard pop and popcorn at the concessions, take advantage of enjoying a fine glass of wine, import beer, or a bucket of Grain Belt at a reasonable price. A spacious lobby encourages people to hang out in small groups. Something else to enjoy: Zeitgeist is the result of a social venture funded by a private, family foundation in-town. All profits from the complex go directly into their grant-making efforts.
