Midwest Living Review

Roller coaster lovers need to check out this attraction on one of Duluth's steepest hills.

Opened in 2010, the Timber Twister is among Duluth's newest tourist attractions. The alpine roller coaster touts itself as one of only four in the country and the only one in the Midwest. The year-round attraction is located at Spirit Mountain -- a recreation area overlooking Duluth, and, of course, Lake Superior. The approximately 3-minute course is built off the ground on actual roller coaster track. Individual cars that hold up to two people sit on the track, allowing for a more personalized experience. The cars can go up to 26 mph but as the passenger, you determine how fast you want to go by controlling two bars on the cart. We attempted to go wide open the entire way and failed. On some of the sharper corners, you definitely felt you'd fly off the track if you didn't brake. By our third run, we were a little more daring but even then, the adrenaline was pumping.Once at the bottom, you are put on an automated track that brings you back to the top of the hill by winding through the woods. It is a relaxing way to end your journey. Once on top, you have the option of grabbing a snack at the concession or doing it all over again. The only downside: It can get expensive fast. A single ride is $8, and a double ride is $12. A pack of 10 rides runs $60. At just 10 minutes or so for a ride, it won't fill your entire day but it is definitely worth trying out at least once. When we visited the lines weren't too long, but we waited until later in the day to go. The line moves fast, but midday, it can get pretty long. Open daily, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
