Midwest Living Review
This popular cafe elevates even the most ordinary ham and cheese sandwich to gourmet heights with truffle oil, Gruyère and fontina cheese, and fresh tomato on grilled ciabatta. The New Scenic also dreams up seasonal dishes you’re not likely to see anywhere else on a North Shore road trip. For example, the summer menu might propose sashimi tuna tacos with Thai peanut sauce, curried blue mussels, and green tea soba noodle salad.
If you’re in a hurry, at least stop in and order a dessert to go. Summertime difficult-to-choose-between temptations included a pistachio tartlet with creme fraiche and raspberries; a blackberry cream cheese tart; chocolate ganache with butterscotch, sea salt and blackberries; and a goat cheese cake with huckleberry gastrique. Our pick? Bittersweet chocolate pudding with a layer of banana cream on a crisp shortbread crust topped with caramelized fingerling bananas that crackled like creme brulee. We savored it—and wanted to go back for more—while sitting beneath shady pines admiring gardens so rich with color, many guests opt to dine in the sunshine among the flowers. Those who eat inside enjoy colorful paintings, rustic wooden bowls and other art that adorns the bustling pine-paneled restaurant.
No matter where you sit, the best view of all is Lake Superior in all its vast glory. New Scenic Cafe is a winning combination of food, atmosphere and scenery.
