Midwest Living Review
The Mountain Villas near the top of Spirit Mountain just south of Duluth look a little funky, but don't let that discourage you from considering them as a base for your next trip to the area. These rentals tucked into the timber near the tops of the lifts on the Spirit Mountain ski runs offer a beautifully located place to stay in modern cabins, often with a view of the Duluth harbor that may be the highlight of the vacation. The 14 villas are all designed as hexagons that sit atop metal pillars, giving them the sense of a yurt on a pedestal. Each of the 900-square-foot villas features a full kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and two baths. We found the villas clean, modern and, in an unfortunately rare occurrence in rentals, stocked with comfortable beds. Our villa (No. 5) was one of several offering views of the harbor from the dining area, living room and large deck. We paid $145 per night in the height of the summer season and marveled at the bargain each evening as we sat in the living room watching the lights sparkle on the harbor bridges. In winter, the villas are obviously perfect for ski getaways. In summer, guests have instant access to miles of hiking trails around the mountain, and the Timber Twister roller coaster and new Spirit Mountain zip line are about a mile down the road.
