Midwest Living Review

This resort beside the freeway feels mostly like a straight-up big-box hotel, but the kids are sure to love the indoor waterpark.

If you think a tropical-theme hotel on the chilly shore of Lake Superior seems a little out of place, then you haven't been paying close attention to the waterpark arms race among family-oriented hotels in recent years. The Edgewater's The Edge indoor waterpark, full of faux statues inspired by the South Pacific, is typical of the chlorine-scented playgrounds practically considered a standard feature at big hotels these days. The Edgewater's hotel is of standard design and quality. No complaints there. Several of the rooms can handle larger groups, including some with two bedrooms and two baths, which can be closed off to form separate sleeping quarters. Perfect for situations such as grandparents tagging along on vacation. The resort sits where the Duluth freeway tails off into a two-lane highway headed north, so there's a bit of traffic noise. Rooms facing the lake include concrete balconies with chairs, but we found the local seagulls so aggressive and noisy that the balconies aren't all that welcoming. And, of course, you look across the freeway to see Lake Superior. A pedestrian bridge provides access from the hotel to the lakefront walking/biking trails. The waterpark isn't on the scope of those at a Great Wolf or Kalahari, but it's certainly adequate. It includes two tube slides, a lazy river, the de rigueur giant dumping bucket atop a watery play set, water basketball and a couple of hot tubs. Rates from $69.
