Midwest Living Review

Beth Probst
Christmas and community come together for this extraordinary light display in the heart of Duluth.

Even Scrooge -- before his heart grew -- would be impressed with this enchanting urban light display. This annual tour of lights takes you on a journey through themed holiday displays. There are plenty of gingerbread homes, Santa's helpers, reindeer and candy canes covered with brightly colored, flashing lights within the 3-acre park. But for those wanting something a little more unique, you'll be dazzled by the sparkling, life-size displays of regional icons, including the Aerial Lift Bridge and Enger Tower. Along the way, refuel with complimentary hot chocolate, cookies and popcorn. Or warm up by more than 20 bonfire pits, where volunteer reindeer provide free marshmallows on a stick. Kids also get a free hat. End your tour with some holiday tunes. Each night features a musical group from local schools, church choirs and bands. Or check out the gift shop to get the latest Bentleyville Garb. The best part -- everything in the park is free (although donations are encouraged). Bentley started the holiday display at his rural home outside of Duluth. The display, which drew crowds of 70,000 per season, outgrew his home and budget so he partnered with the city of Duluth to expand. Tapping into hundreds of volunteers, this light display reminds folks of what can happen when a community comes together. Parking at local city lots will cost you $4, but you can catch the local Jingle Bus from free parking lots or take the holiday train from Fitger's for just $2 per person. Check out the website for information.
