Midwest Living Review
The A.G. Thomson House is a newly restored 1909 Dutch Colonial B&B located on a 2-acre lot on Duluth's mansion row. The eight-room B&B is an adults-only, no-pet, nonsmoking spot for newlyweds, visiting couples, or someone trying to get away from it all.The main house features four suites, each with a private bathroom and fireplace. The rooms are named after people integral to the history of the home or after some of the region's most prominent features, for instance the Lake Superior Suite. The rooms have historical charm but are surprisingly modern in luxurious amenities. Guests will appreciate the iPod docking stations, high-speed Internet, white robes and gas fireplaces. The most popular suite is located next to the main house and is a handicapped-accessible suite in the old carriage house. The suite features a fully functional kitchen, king-size bed and hydro massage whirlpool tub for two.Common areas include a spacious living room with plenty of reading material, sunroom, formal dining room, patio, impressive gardens and an expansive lawn, complete with a hammock. Upon arrival, you'll notice the aroma of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. There's also a bottle of wine chilling along with complimentary juices, coffee and pop. If it happens to rain during your stay, feel free to take advantage of the 500+ DVD collection that is available free of charge.Breakfast is served daily at 9, but you can arrange to have it served earlier or in your room. On the day we stayed, we enjoyed plenty of fruit, white chocolate-Craisin scones, French toast and a wild rice patty. The recipes are so frequently requested that they are now posted on the A.G. Thomson website. The B&B is located in heart of Duluth's historic Congdon Mansion District and provides moderate views of Lake Superior. On a sunny day, soak in the sun on any one of the many sitting areas outside or wander around to view some of the other majestic homes in the region.Innkeeper Angie first fell in love with the idea of owning a B&B more than 30 years ago. After her husband, Tim, retired from the Air Force, her dream became a reality. Tim and Angie love what they do, which shows from the moment you pull in the driveway to the thank-you note you receive after your stay. Tim mentioned they really believe people arrive as guests and leave as friends. The smaller suites start at $159 during the week, while the spacious Lake Superior Suite can run up to $299 per night on the weekends.
