Midwest Living Review

Robert Lilegard
This overgrown tangle of swamp and forest starts out difficult and soon becomes nearly impassable. Not recommended.

The tourism websites paint this trail as a great little place to spend an hour, and as Lake Vermilion's only water-access hiking trail, it definitely has a compelling hook. But while the dock is in good condition and the picnic tables and fire pit look nice enough, the trail has clearly seen better days. It starts out humorously rugged, the kind of experience that makes you smile about the lengths you've gone to to see the woods. But the joke quickly fades. The tangled, rocky trail becomes completely overgrown, with hanging branches, pools of water and big boulders making it impassable. Sooner or later you'll give up entirely and wonder why you bothered. Choose other area trails to get close to nature.
