Midwest Living Review

Soak up serene views of the Mississippi River and surrounding woods along this 2.5-mile paved trail.

The easiest way to enjoy the Mississippi River and views of the Beaver Islands is to take the popular 2.5-mile paved Beaver Island Trail beginning near St. Cloud State University's Halenbeck Hall and the 10th Street dam. It runs along the river, past the historic Children's Home and into a dense, cool tunnel of trees. It's the most popular place in the city to in-line skate, jog, walk, bike and push strollers. Off-trail dirt paths hug the steep river bank and get you closer to the water. It's a beautiful, wild place to explore, but keep an eye out for poison ivy and steer clear of areas flagged for erosion. The trail does extend through campus, along the high riverbank, past an historic neighborhood and into downtown, as well.
