Midwest Living Review

Aaron Peterson
This simple, comfortable campground is suitable for visitors exploring nearby Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The 132-site Woodland Park Campground perches on the edge of a sandy bluff above Lake Superior. Nearly all sites (from $24) offer electricity, and most provide cable and water as well. Two well-maintained bathroom/shower facilities are centrally located. Overall, the facility has a comfortable, broken-in feeling; some campers are even the third generations of their families to vacation here.

Downtown Grand Marais (population: 300) is only three blocks away, standing ready with a brewery, an outfitter, a grocery and a hardware store, as well as interesting shops reflecting the town’s history as a harbor on the shore of the world’s largest freshwater lake. Excellent fishing and swimming opportunities are within quick walking distance.

To the west of Grand Marais are more than 40 miles of undeveloped Lake Superior shoreline sweeping along the sandy beaches, enormous dunes and 200-foot-high sandstone cliffs at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. To the east, the seemingly endless Lake Superior beaches are nearly empty except for a few beachcombers seeking semiprecious stones called agates. Two caveats: Biting insects can be bad at times, and a stiff north wind off Lake Superior can bring temperatures down into the 50s, even at the height of summer.
