Midwest Living Review

Beth Probst
A nonprofit community theatre in a working boathouse located on the shores of Lake Superior encompasses the history and importance of the area's fishing industry.

Lake Superior Theatre has found a unique way to blend the lake's beauty with the historical significance of the fishing industry, while it embraces tourism and the arts. Created in 1998, this volunteer-run, nonprofit community theater showcases plays, musicals and movies in a working boathouse that sits between Lower Harbor Marina and Coast Guard Break Wall on the shore of Lake Superior. This is what it says it is--a community theater--and the quality of performance reflects that. Don't come expecting a professional production. It's the ambiance that is the draw here. Old fishing gear, maps and oars hang along the walls, setting the stage. A breeze off the lake keeps the non-air-conditioned theater cool, and during intermission you can watch sailboats gliding into the nearby marina. What better way to spend a summer evening? That said, be aware that parking is two blocks away and there are no restrooms (portable restrooms are available in the parking lot). If those details don't deter you, the lovely atmosphere and the knowledge that you are supporting a local theatre will make this a memorable experience.
