Typically we travel to the UP with full knowledge that you don't go for the dining. Most UP restaurant meals present a steady diet of hamburgers, pasties and boiled whitefish. Apply ketchup liberally. On the Keweenaw Peninsula, however, we were pleasantly surprised over and over again at the food we found. The Harbor Haus is Exhibit A. It was on the short list of must-do restaurants suggested by a rock-climbing guide we met, and the recommendation was spot on. The German-themed Harbor Haus sits on the actual Copper Harbor, with big windows overlooking the water. When the Isle Royale ferry comes in each evening, the Haus' waitresses apparently go out and do the can-can on the back dock to welcome it home. The menu, which is updated daily, is far more wide-ranging than the schnitzel-something lineup we've come to expect from many Midwest restaurants billing themselves as German. We started with an appetizer of three hummus selections served with lingonberry jam and smoked German cheese. Our entree was an ahi tuna steak with guacamole-pepper sauce and au gratin potatoes that provided a reminder that this familiar side dish can actually be delightful rather than something crusty served at church dinners. The side of mushroom risotto was one that we won't soon forget either. All the dishes are served with eye-catching presentations you'd expect at fine restaurants in far more urban settings. The prices are worth noting because they run much higher than most other local eateries. Expect to pay about $35 per diner.
