Midwest Living Review

Marquette's three main beaches offer great choices for sunbathing, swimming or just relaxing.

Finding a spot to sun yourself on Marquette's beaches is easy if you know what you're after. Three main beaches hug Lakeshore Boulevard: McCarty's Cove is a white-sand beach that sits between the rocky shores of Presque Isle Park and the more developed Lower Harbor. Anything that isn't marked "private" is fair game for parking and beach-going. Keep in mind that, even on a hot August day, Lake Superior's water temperature hovers in the 40's, and while swimming on a summer day looks tempting, out-of-towners may find it a bit shocking. Known by locals as Picnic Rocks Beach, McCarty's Cove is, as its name suggests, a sheltered cove with shallow, sandy beaches that offer a calmer experience for those wishing to just relax and take in the lake's splendor. If you don't mind a crowd, venture to Presque Isle Beach. This is a highly popular spot, and parking can be an issue. Dozens of families spread across the beach, sunbathing and swimming, while the more adventurous take to the cliffs to dive into the water below. Even if you aren't up for this daredevil experience, watching the kids and even some adults attempt back flips and cannonballs off the rocks is great entertainment. For something quieter, wander up the beach about 10 minutes to perch on towering black rocks overlooking the water. The park also boasts buildings that can be rented for special events, some picnic spaces, grills, a vending area and plenty of restrooms. Last, Lower Harbor, the most developed of the three, offers lush, grassy picnic spots, open spaces perfect for a game of Frisbee, views of the bustling marina and a massive wooden playground that is clearly a hit. Snacks, drinks and restrooms are nearby.
