Midwest Living Review
One of the region's most popular vacation areas fans out from the northwestern corner of the Lower Peninsula's Grand and Little Traverse bays. From Traverse City, the region's busy hub, northeast 60 miles to Petoskey, broad beaches, first-class resorts and towns known for shops and galleries outline the bays.In Traverse City, motels with their own beaches trace the shore. Vacation food takes on new meaning in inventive restaurants at the leading edge of the area's rich food scene. You can walk from the shops and cafes of Petoskey's historic Gaslight District to the historic Perry Hotel and the town beach.South of town, the elite lakeside resort of Bay Harbor and its acclaimed 27 holes of golf spread along the shore. Nearly 50 courses carve into this region, and more resorts sprinkle the landscape. Byways lead inland to Alden, Bellaire and other appealing small towns, as well as glistening lakes. Vineyards stripe the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas which reach into Grand Traverse Bay. Many of the 20 wineries offer tours and tasting, another of the area's pleasures.
