Midwest Living Review

Maggie Ginsberg-Schutz
Gather with the locals at this 1950s diner featuring reliable food and an ice cream dairy.

This fun, family-owned 1950s diner has been in business for more than 60 years, and it’s obviously a beloved local institution. The House of Flavors name is a nod to the operation’s dairy based in nearby Ludington. It produces 400,000 gallons and 32 flavors of ice cream every week under the Park Dairy brand.

Ice cream is an obvious draw, but there’s also an expansive menu of traditional greasy spoon fare—sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, rotisserie meat dinners, meat loaf, even liver and onions, as well as specialty offerings like a cherry chicken wrap ($6.99) and a fresh roasted turkey and asparagus melt ($6.99). Breakfast is served all day, and the food is affordable. Weekdays from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., you can choose a short stack of pancakes, French toast, or an egg with toast and potatoes for just $2.50. There’s also a large selection of sundaes, homemade cobblers, apple crisp, shakes, malts and phosphates.

Our meat and cheese scramble ($6.99) offered a choice of crisp bacon, ham, sausage or sausage gravy, and the eggs were mixed with both Monterey jack and cheddar. The scramble was served with hash browns, toast and a little cup of jelly that tasted homemade.

Decorwise, oversize black-and-white photos of 1950s locals line the walls, and the floors are classic checkerboard tile. Holiday sock-hop music wafted through and plates clanked as we watched a fat ham spinning on the rotisserie in back. If you happen to stop by during the off-season (Labor Day through Memorial Day), House of Flavors offers a free scoop of ice cream with any meal.
