Midwest Living Review

Jacob Wheeler
This time-share resort along Grand Traverse Bay also offers a luxe place to spend the night.

Despite the amenities Tamarack Lodge offers on a daily basis -- beach bonfires, movie nights, wine tastings -- developer R.C. Hermann says that the parking lot is usually empty by midmorning. There's just so much to do in the Traverse City region, that people don't spend a ton of time in the 29 time-share condos. But you couldn't go wrong to spend the day sunbathing at Tamarack's beach on East Grand Traverse Bay, sipping great northern Michigan wines in the lobby with a sommelier from nearby the Chateau Chantal vineyard, or lounging on your outdoor patio with a good book as the waves lick the shoreline below.Tamarack boasts that woodsy, "up north" aura. The first thing you'll notice in the lobby is a large stone fireplace that, whether or not it's lit, emanates a cabin-like cozy warmth. Antique outboard motors and logging sleds remind you that you have left the rat race behind. Each room is decorated in Arts and Crafts era architecture, reminiscent of the grand lodges of yesterday, and boasting cherry and maple wood cabinets, stone and tile surfaces, and modern appliances. From $320.Currently confined to one building, Tamarack opened in 2006 and plans to add three more structures, including a conference center, recreational facilities and an upscale steak house.
