Midwest Living Review

Trevor Meers
These secluded vacation rentals sit on a bluff just outside of town, allowing for a quiet getaway with the convenience of a five-minute drive into Saugatuck.

The suites are owned by Michigan Vacation Rentals, which manages a wide variety of lodgings in the Saugatuck/Douglas area. The suites consist of about 20 units in a building set on a bluff above town. Timber surrounds the property, which means you don't get a lake view here, but you also get a nice sense of being separated from the town around you. Downtown Saugatuck is about a five-minute drive away, and the famed Oval Beach is even closer. Many of the Suites' units have decks or ground-level patios overlooking the swimming pool. The suite we stayed in was spacious and comfortably furnished, although the furniture and overall design were dated, as is common in vacation rentals. We were disappointed in several service details at the Suites. For check-in, the website sends you to a street address that turns out to be a tropical fish store that's never heard of the Suites. The check-in staff seemed surprised when we pointed out this problem, and said they hadn't been at that address for about six years. The code on our electronic door lock didn't work, so we had to call the office for help. There's an on-site laundry facility at the Suites, but we had to hunt down a housekeeping staffer to open the door so we could use it. There's no WiFi service, and we only got about five channels on our TV. And our rooms (and those of the guests staying next door to us, they told us) could've been cleaner. The kitchen floor clearly hadn't been mopped for a while, and we found two half-full beers in the fridge.
