Midwest Living Review

Amy S. Eckert
This fabulous downtown Fennville bakery and restaurant focuses on local foods.

Those who love fresh, local produce flock to Salt of the Earth's dining room in Fennville. The restaurant also purchases local cheeses and cures, smokes and carves its own meats. You'll find a large selection of local beers and wines (including those from Fennville's Fenn Valley Winery) as well. A walk-in bakery sells desserts and crusty artisan breads. The service at Salt of the Earth has often been sketchy on our visits. Once the front desk lost our reservation; another time they took forever to take drink orders. But on our most recent visit the service was terrific. And the food is so good, we don't mind overlooking the hiccups. Be sure to check the Fresh Board for the evening's specials, usually related to seasonal produce. On our recent visit, fresh wild mushrooms inspired a savory and delicious ravioli. We also ordered a salad of fresh farmer's greens served family style; a tender, braised pork shoulder over polenta; and a bottle of Fenn Valley's Meritage wine. The dessert special -- a blueberry sundae with white chocolate fudge, Tahitian vanilla gelato and honey smothered with local blueberries -- was simply heavenly... and really large. But we managed. Entrees cost about $20, but sandwiches and pizzas are less pricey.
