Midwest Living Review

An ecofriendly inn just 90 minutes from Chicago feels elegant but comfortable.

Innkeepers Rodney and Linda Jo Clough have done a nice job of converting what was once a summer cottage in southwest Michigan into an elegant, ecofriendly, four-guest-room inn. Muted earth tones and contemporary design make Rabbit Run feel relaxed and grown-up. Each room also has a large sitting area, a private patio or balcony, and a wet bar stocked with each day's breakfast. The inn also offers free day use of bicycles and beach supplies to take with you to nearby Warren Dunes.Just 90 minutes northeast of Chicago and within a few miles of the Warren Dunes State Park (with a beautiful Lake Michigan beach) and southwest Michigan's best wineries, the inn is an ideal place to relax. Indigenous evergreen trees, a koi pond and cozy sitting areas in gazebos, balconies and the common outdoor patio offer respite just off Red Arrow Highway. (You will notice some noise from Red Arrow Highway when you're on the balcony, unfortunately, especially in summer, but with all of those trees, you'll never see it.)The Cloughs' trees are just the beginning of Rabbit Run's green initiatives. Other additions include geothermal heating and cooling, ecofriendly cleaning products and bathroom supplies, low-impact lighting and flooring, organic fertilizers (when necessary) and loads of recycling. Children 12 and older are allowed at Rabbit Run, but with the inn's pristine decorating, we would only feel comfortable spending an evening here with older or very mature children. And this isn't a B&B: Guests get fruit, juice and yogurt in the fridge; a nice in-room coffeemaker; and a basket of fresh baked goods delivered to your room in the morning. Room rates begin at $155 in the off-season, $170 in high season with two-night minimums on holidays and summer weekends.
