Midwest Living Review
The Purple Rose Theatre focuses on quality theater at a price everyone can afford (tickets usually run $25 to $40). Founded by Chelsea native and actor Jeff Daniels, The Purple Rose was created in an old bus garage. Today, the 168-seat, thrust-stage venue provides an intimate, Midwestern theater experience. Attendees pay one flat ticket price regardless of where they sit, mainly because there's not a bad seat in the house. Actors enter the stage from all directions, making you feel as though you're in the middle of the action. The theater showcases new Amaerican plays, often with middle-American themes--something Daniels believes wouldn't be shown in large theater districts, like New York's. The theater is also dedicated to using Midwestern actors, directors, playwrights and designers. If you're wondering whether you might catch a glimpse of Jeff Daniels--it certainly is a possibility. Her performs regularly in one-man shows, premiers a new play on this stage nearly every year and remains the theater's executive director.
