Midwest Living Review

Gorgeous Lake Michigan views and a sophisticated-yet-familiar menu have made Twisted Olive a welcome arrival on Petoskey's dining scene.

Expect to gasp when you step into the tiny, sunny dining room at Twisted Olive: panoramic views of lush foliage and azure Lake Michigan unfold from every window. In a setting like that, they could serve a dish of corn flakes and it would taste divine, but luckily, that's not even an issue. The food at this casually sophisticated breakfast-lunch cafe is every bit as good as the view. We visited for weekday breakfast, and the restaurant was hopping, with every table occupied and happy chatter filling the small space. The menu offers interesting spins on typical breakfast fare. Eggs Monaco ($8.95) pairs basted eggs, saffron hollandaise and asparagus with grilled challah, a sort of vegetarian twist on eggs Benedict that would be delicious on its own, but is fabulous with the generous addition of roasted potatoes and a jam-filled pastry on the side. The daily quiche is adorable, an individual-size round tart with a fresh berry garnish. Healthful eaters will appreciate Great Grains ($6.95), a stick-to-your ribs porridge made of farro, quinoa, steel-cut oats and flaxseed with walnuts and dried cherries. Coffee refills arrive promptly, and though the restaurant is busy and a bit noisy, no one is pushing you to leave. Not in the mood for a sit-down meal? The lobby of Twisted Olive doubles as a tiny bakery. You can sit at a stool in the window or perch on a zebra-stripe chair to enjoy a French press coffee and an iced lemon scone or croissant from the glass case. Delightful.
