McLean and Eakin Booksellers

McLean and Eakin Booksellers is a perfect example of why independent bookstores will survive (maybe even thrive?) in the digital age: The staff is phenomenal. Unlike the big-box bookstores, where buying decisions are based solely on what will make money, the folks at McLean and Eakin rely on good taste and personal relationships with their clientele in choosing what to put on the shelves. Browsing in this surprisingly big store, you get the sense that someone has hand-picked every book you see, and maybe even read it, to make sure it's worth your time. (Which isn't to say it's all highbrow stuff; just thoughtfully chosen.) A large Hemingway section will appeal to literary travelers following in the legendary author's footsteps here in northern Michigan. An excellent children's section invites lingering. A prominent shelf in the front stocks selections from local book clubs, including several sponsored and held in the shop. A large poster advertises a packed schedule of signings and speakers. There's also a nice selection of paper products and stationery. But books are the real focus here, and for anyone who loves to read, this store is an absolute delight.
