Midwest Living Review

Kim Schneider
The Mackinac Island Bike Shop rents bikes for all routes, from easy island-perimeter trips to heart-pumping midisland climbs.

Biking is one of the quickest and easiest ways to get a sense of the scope, beauty, history and geology of Mackinac Island. Besides, where else can you bike along a state highway (in this case, M-185) that doesn't allow cars?

The 8-mile, approximately 90-minute shoreline loop is the most popular on the island. It passes Arch Rock, miscellaneous cannons (remnants from the fort days) and stunning views of Mackinac Bridge. Riding through the center of the island offers more of a workout, as well as different visual rewards. Pedal the heart-pumping climb to the top of the island to see Skull Cave, the Wawashkamo Golf Course built on a one-time battlefield, and historic cemeteries marked by beautiful angel statues and stone gates.

The Mackinac Island Bike Shop offers rentals for kids and adults starting at $8/hour, as well as self-guided tour maps, itinerary suggestions, water bottles and even rain ponchos.
