Midwest Living Review
Finding L. Mawby Vineyards may pose a bit of a challenge for first-time visitors, but don't let that stop you from going. It's easy to miss the lone sign off M-22/S West Bay Shore Drive, so be sure to use the GPS coordinates (44 degrees 54.838 N - 85 degrees 39.252 W).
Downhill from the gravel parking lot, a barnlike structure houses the tasting room. Past the bright yellow exterior and just inside the door, placards with humorous quotes line a wood beam; descriptions of available wines line up along the beam over the tasting counter. Casual and open, the main space consists of a wood bar-counter and simple tables and chairs. Just off the main area, screened-veranda type rooms overlook the vineyards and an outdoor area with picnic tables.
Though the vibe is low-key, laid-back and fun, L. Mawby makes some seriously good bubbly. Choose from the M. Lawrence line (fermented in a closed tank) with whimsical names like Fizz, Green and Sex or the more traditional L. Mawby line wines (bottle fermented) with names like Blanc De Blancs, Cremant Classic and Conservancy. Our friendly, knowledgeable servers poured samples that included Blanc de Blancs and Sex, a popular M. Lawrence rose. This blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is, not surprisingly, one that's fun to request. We found it to be mildly sweet and nice.
Pours of two wines are complimentary; there is a charge for additional tastings as well as pairings with cheese and crackers. The tasting room is open daily May through October and three days a week November through April.
