Journeyman Distillery

Whether your preference is whiskey, gin, vodka or rum, Journeyman Distillery crafts them all on-site using local ingredients. Owner Bill Welter is a former banker who became interested in whiskey after spending time in Scotland. He’s since created his hip distillery in artsy Three Oaks, Michigan, within the former 1880s Featherbone Corset Factory. (Ironically, the factory owner was a hardcore prohibitionist back in the day.) Bill's extensive remodel uncovered many relics from the factory’s glory days, including old sewing needles wedged between the cracks of the wooden floors.

Open since October 2011, Journeyman showcases an interior of polished wood, weathered metal and retro fixtures, and a fantastic sound system lures guests over to the sampling station. Try a “white flight” of vodka, white whiskey, rum and gin for $3, or the whiskey flight of four samples for $4. Then move on to delicious cocktails ($8) like the White Dog, Journeyman's take on the Greyhound, or the Red Arrow Spritzer. It's really fun to watch the mixologist muddle and swirl drinks as she details recipes for the not-so-simple syrups and ingredients. Journeyman has also recently added several small plates, including house-cured olives and charcuterie from Drier's Meat Market, a 100-year-old smokehouse just around the corner.
