Midwest Living Review

Amy Eckert
This state park is known for its photogenic lighthouse, golden beaches and campground.

About 8 miles west of downtown Holland, the city’s namesake state park is the most popular of the Lake Michigan beaches that define this area.

An $8 day pass allows access to the beautiful golden sand beach, cool Lake Michigan surf and a picture-perfect lighthouse called Big Red. The Beach campground offers 98 paved sites tucked between sand dunes, and the Lake Macatawa campground holds 211 wooded sites (less visually dramatic, but cooler than those on the sand). Both campgrounds arewithin 50 feet of swimming beaches. Holland State Park also contains a beach house with convenient changing facilities, a playground and picnic grounds. For sustenance, burgers, hot dogs and ice cream are available at stores within an easy walk.

While summer is the obvious time of year to visit, winter also brings beauty to the lakeshore when frigid temperatures, strong winds and constant waves freeze the shoreline into a landscape that resembles the Arctic. Big Red and the pier receive a coating of immense icicles, and the shore is edged with jagged peaks of ice that break into beautiful bergs in spring.
