Midwest Living Review

Amy S. Eckert
Holland's sleek boutique lodging is one of the world's few LEED-certified hotels.

Holland's newest hotel, CityFlats opened its doors in 2008 one block away from downtown's 8th Street. It's a sleek-looking hotel that prides itself not only in its contemporary design but also in its small carbon footprint: CityFlats is the first LEED-Certified Gold hotel in the Midwest and one of only a handful around the world.

Each of CityFlat's 56 guest rooms is designed with bamboo fiber bed sheets, recycled vinyl floor runners, and bathroom countertops of recycled concrete and glass. Each room's trash is sorted each day for recyclables. Even unused soaps are cleaned and donated to Third World nations. But what we love about CityFlats is that you don't have to give up style for environmental consciousness. Crisp, clean lines are the rule, with the most common colors being white, bright green and shades of orange and brown. Mattresses rest on wooden platforms of bamboo and each room has an iPod docking station, a flat screen TV, a desk and free WiFi.

Meals are served on CityFlats' main floor at the coffee shop called CityBru and you'll find free continental breakfast here on weekdays. The fifth-story restaurant CityVu Bistro specializes in creative flatbreads and is Holland's only rooftop restaurant. And CitySen offers a pleasant, stylish lobby bar that frequently offers a happy hour.

Rates begin at $129 in the off-season; they begin at $149 from May through September.
