Midwest Living Review

Kendra Williams
For two and a half weeks in the fall, nearly 2,000 artists come to Grand Rapids to have their work judged by the public in the annual ArtPrize.

From late September through early October, nearly 2,000 artists flock to Grand Rapids to display their work and have it be judged -- not by a jury or a panel, but by the public. The goal of the annual festival is to open the conversation between the artists and the public, where everyone's opinion counts. Our recommendations: If you plan to stay overnight, book your hotel early. We tried a couple of properties two months in advance, and they were sold out. When you get to town, stop at one of the seven exhibition centers and buy the $5 map and ArtPrize wristband that will allow you to ride the shuttle as much as you'd like during the event. We paid $15 and got the official ArtPrize guide with our map and wristband; the guide includes coupons to use at restaurants and hotels around town, plus information on the participating artists and venues. Also while you are at one of the exhibition centers, use one of the computer terminals to register to vote -- then take your government-issued ID to an ArtPrize voting station so a volunteer can confirm you and activate your voting account. (You won't be able to vote without taking that step, even if you register to vote online before you go.)
