Midwest Living Review

In every season, Garland is a first-class retreat in the lower peninsula's woodsy northeastern corner.

Billed as the "largest log structure east of the Mississippi," Garland Lodge and Resort in Lewiston gets sophisticated-rustic just right. With 172 rooms, suites and cabins in the woods, the northeast Michigan resort offers a refreshed lodge ambience showcasing log furniture, antler lights and sconces, and polished log walls and wooden beams. The high-ceilinged lobby showcases earthy tiles and a striking Mission-style light fixture. Oversize stained-glass windows and a moose mounted on the stone fireplace, along with an outdoor fireplace on the adjoining patio, add to the atmosphere.

Dining options include Tamarack Restaurant (open daily during golf season), sporty Antlers Bar and Grill, and Bunkers Bar on the Patio. For pleasure seekers, the on-site White Cedar Spa offers a full menu of services and Aveda products, and four championship golf courses feature manicured flowerbeds, fountains and challenging holes. Guests can also enjoy seasonal guided fly-fishing or canoeing on the Au Sable River, as well as mountain biking, tennis and swimming.

Don’t plan on any winter visits or activities this year, though; the entire lodge closes for the season in October 2012 and won’t reopen until May 2013.
