Midwest Living Review

Amy S. Eckert
The mantra at this sweet little bakery is from-scratch, whether you're shopping for bread, jam, garden-fresh tomato sauce or crunchy dill pickles.

Colleen Froehlich makes every food item at Froehlich's from scratch. Located in the tiny town of Three Oaks, about 10 miles north of the Indiana border, the shop is best-known for her breads -- honey sunflower, cracked corn, herbed cheese, French bread, muffins and bagels. But Colleen makes all of the canned preserves and jams as well. It's not surprising considering the neon Froehlich's sign behind the counter comes from Colleen's grandfather's grocery store. Early in the morning, most visitors stop in for baked goods, and you can see staff working in the kitchen. At lunch, you can order fresh sandwiches stuffed with local produce, meats and cheeses. A simple smoked turkey sandwich on a whole-grain roll was fresh, delicious and loaded with veggies -- well worth the $8 price tag. While you wait for your food, browse cookbooks, kitchen gadgets and Froehlich's canned goods, including home-grown and canned dill pickles, raspberry jam, roasted-cherry tomato sauce, spice mixes, even organic whole wheat dog biscuits.
