Midwest Living Review

Fennville's favorite tourist destination is this family-owned winery just outside of town.

Just outside of Fennville on a gorgeous, hilly road, Fenn Valley Winery is an especially good stop for wine newbies or groups of wine tasters. With 36 varietals on the tasting list there is truly something for everyone's palate, and the tasting bar staff is good at explaining the differences between wine varietals. White wine varietals are the best at wineries in West Michigan, and Fenn Valley is no exception. You can't go wrong with a Fenn Valley Riesling or one of the winery's other German and French whites: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminers and an excellent ice wine. Fenn Valley's best reds include Cabernet Franc, Meritage and Pinot Noir. Twice each fall (generally in late October and mid November) Fenn Valley hosts Harvest Winemaker's dinners including a five-course gourmet meal paired with six wines. A $70 ticket covers all food, beverage, tax and tips as well as a predinner wine cellar tour where young Fenn Valley wines are sampled fresh from the tanks. Then it's upstairs for an elaborate spread of specialty cheeses, fruits and sparkling wine before dinner of local produce, meats and cheeses. The dinners are extremely popular. Make reservations by phone in advance. Wine tastings at Fenn Valley are free, with visitors limited to six tastes. Fenn Valley also offers free winery tours and other wine-tasting and -pairing events year-round. Visitors should be prepared for crowds on weekends, especially in fall, as well as the occasional tour bus.
