Midwest Living Review

Artist Tyree Guyton is making Detroit a bit brighter with his Heidelberg Project, a unique display of urban art in a rundown east side neighborhood.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2011, the Heidelberg Project is the result of one artist's effort to change his community. Tyree Guyton, now an internationally recognized artist because of the project, paints abandoned houses and decorates the street with old shoes, toys and other discarded objects, creating a two-block area full of color, symbolism and intrigue. The unusual display of urban art is in a rundown east side neighborhood along Mt. Elliott Street, off of Gratiot, where Guyton grew up. The mission is simple: Improve the lives of people and neighborhoods through art. It seems to be working, too. An offshoot endeavor, ACE2 (Art, Community and Environmental Education) fills the gap in art education in metro schools, teaching kids the values of environment and community. And the neighborhood draws more than 275,000 visitors each year.
