Midwest Living Review

Emily Tennyson
This beloved waterfront restaurant on the Detroit River serves solid portions of steaks, sandwiches and seafood in a nautical setting.

Nautical-theme dining is a fine art at Sindbads, a venerable restaurant that, despite its somewhat dubious location on the Detroit River on the city's far east side, regularly draws throngs. Suburbanites and city dwellers alike come for boating-inspired meals like the Spinnaker, Gulf Stream or the Schooner. Diners gravitate to myriad forms of fried or broiled fish, dense sandwiches and hefty steaks, often served with an old-school beverage like a Grasshopper, Golden Cadillac or even a glass of Lambrusco. Naturally, there are sides of onion rings, french fries and coleslaw. The protein-centric menu is also heavy on carbs, and servers are quick to replenish breadbaskets and offer rolls with every course. Family owned for more than 60 years, Sindbads is still in good shape, with new window treatments, shiny wooden floors and even state-of-the-art restrooms. Its longtime success may derive from the fact that Detroiters love a waterfront view, or maybe it's just that the simple, generous portions taste so darn good. Sandwiches from $7; main courses from $15.
