Motor City Brewing Works

Despite Detroit's perceived urban blight, Motor City Brewing Works, the state's second oldest microbrewery, is a bastion of shiny, well-landscaped prosperity. Located in a renovated loft area, the brewery's large vats are second string to an eclectic decor featuring poured concrete counters, mosaic walls, wrought-iron skylights and plenty of local art. While the beer is impeccable, especially the Detroit-themed Ghetto blaster, its diminutive menu composed of Eastern Market-sourced items is equally fine. Vast, garden-fresh leafy salads studded with grape tomatoes, red onion and goat cheese are a steal at $4, and the brewery also boasts a wood-burning pizza oven. While it's tough to make a choice, diners can't go wrong with a lamb-studded Greek-themed pizza that marries Mediterranean tang with a delicate, salty crust. Coupled with Motor City's pale ale, it's a locavore dream of a lunch. Later, climb up the red metal steps to the brewery's deck, where herbs planted in beer barrels rest aside comfortable tables and wicker couches. It's a cozy, hidden respite in the heart of downtown.
