Cable, Mogasheen Resort A twisting lane takes you to Lake Namekagon (16 miles east of Cable) in Wisconsin's north woods. Delavan, Allyn Mansion Inn In 1992, the National Trust for Historic Preservation chose this inn as the grand-prize winner of its Great American Home Awards. De Pere, The James Street Inn Guests can enjoy a view of the water from nearly all 36 rooms, which are decorated with custom artwork and wooden blinds. Fifield, Boyd's Mason Lake Resort You're assured plenty of privacy and room to roam at this ranch-size resort, encompassing 2,600 wooded acres halfway between Hayward and Minocqua. At the end of a winding road 15 miles from the closest town, 18 cabins (some the size of homes) cluster near the white clapboard dining lodge. Green Lake, McConnell Inn This stately inn whisks you back nearly 100 years to when vacationers first headed for Green Lake, Wisconsin's deepest natural inland lake. Hayward, Ross' Teal Lake Lodge A sense of nostalgia surrounds this woodsy 220-acre resort 20 miles east of Hayward. It's been in the Ross family for more than 80 years. Great-Grandma's recipes star at meals. The 22 lakeside cottages and homes have a yesteryear feel, or try a newer townhouse-like suite. Hudson, Phipps Inn Bed and Breakfast The cheerful sound of a player piano surrounds you the moment you step inside the Phipps Inn. An eight-sided tower topped with a green "witch's cap" roof highlights this home that local lumberman William Phipps built in 1884. Lac du Flambeau, Dillman's Sand Lake Lodge At the tip of a wooded peninsula 12 miles northwest of Woodruff, vacationers have relaxed here for more than 65 years. Lodgings, which overlook the clear waters of White Sand Lake, vary from newer motel-style rooms and rooms in the older Lodge Annex to one- to three-bedroom cabins and two-story chalets with full kitchen facilities, some fireplaces and screened porches. 715-588-3143.

Lake Delton, Peterson Cottage If you're going to rent a cabin in the woods, why not spend the night the Wright way: at the Seth Peterson Cottage. It's the world's only Frank Lloyd Wright building that the public can rent as a vacation retreat. The cottage sleeps four. 608-254-6551.

Lake Geneva, Grand Geneva Resort & Spa East of Lake Geneva, this resort, including two renowned golf courses, sprawls across 1,600 acres. Langlade, Wolf River Lodge This hemlock log lodge just north of Langlade (65 miles northwest of Green Bay) has attracted trout fishermen and canoeists since 1919. Madison, Mansion Hill Inn At this cozy retreat, a valet ushers guests into the marble-floored foyer and up the polished mahogany staircase. Some of the mansion's 11 rooms take their names from historic figures with ties to the house. Minocqua, Driftwood Lodge As you approach this cozy little enclave clustered along both sides of a shady lane on a 6-acre peninsula, it's hard to imagine Al Capone hiding out here years ago. Phelps, The Hazen Inn Opened in 1901 as a fishing lodge, this chocolate-colored inn had fallen on hard times before owners Joel and Janet McClure bought it in 1993. Today, two wide staircases lead to eight guest rooms and one suite, or guests can opt for one of the inn's three log cabins. 800-335-6904.

Plymouth, 52 Stafford Fifty miles north of Milwaukee, this inn, with its 19 rooms named for famous Irish men, is soaked with Gaelic influence. 800-421-4667.

Poynette, The Jamieson House Inn You'll think you're back in the 1800s when you stay at this cream-colored Italianate beauty. A vintage brick schoolhouse and a Victorian mansion also are part of this complex, which includes 12 rooms, 11 with whirlpools and all with private baths. 608-635-4100.

Sister Bay, Little Sister Resort Tall cedars shade the cabins (which have one to three bedrooms ), all remodeled with loving touches such as Scandinavian-inspired stenciling on the walls. Sister Bay, Pheasant Park The white frame lodge with green shingles looks like an old-time Door County inn, but it really opened in July 1995. The individually-decorated condos include fireplaces, double whirlpools and kitchens. 920-854-7287.

Sturgeon Bay, Gordon's Lodge More than a half-century old, this resort 7 miles north of the town of Baileys Harbor sprawls across a low-lying wooded point jutting into serene North Bay. Woodruff, Coon's Franklin Lodge A genteel sense of nostalgia surrounds you at this 250-acre resort along Trout Lake in north-central Wisconsin (75 miles north of Wausau).
