South Dakota Lodgings

South Dakota is known for its great places and faces, but now you can discover its fabulous inns and lodges.

The following resorts, inns, and bed-and-breakfasts were featured in recent issues of Midwest Living. Because packages are always being introduced and altered, you might want to call the property first.

Chamberlain, Cedar Shore Resort Dwarfed by windswept hills and wide open spaces, this new resort rises like an oasis beside the Missouri River. (It's technically located on the Oklahoma side of the border.) Inside the cream-colored stucco building, rich woods, Mission-style furnishings and light earth tones create a restful mood. 605-734-6376.

Custer, Sylvan Lake Lodge Step out the door of this 1930s-era lodge and follow the path through the pines. The timber-and-stone lodge sprawls across a rocky, pine-covered ridge above the lake in the northwest corner of Custer State Park. Each of the 31 surrounding log cabins has its own personality. Ask for one of the larger new rooms. 800-658-3530 and 605-255-4531.

Custer State Park, Blue Bell Lodge Savor the silence from an easy chair beside the pine-scented fire in one of 29 comfortable cabins. When there isn't snow, buffalo may graze through the pines beyond your windows. 800-658-3530.

Deadwood, Bullock Hotel Originally a hardware store, this three-story red sandstone building has been restored to appear as it did in the late 19th century. 800-336-1876.

Hot Springs, Toal House Built in 1891, this former poker house entertained businessmen who came from all over to visit the town's warm mineral springs. Antique quilts and four-poster beds decorate the seven rooms (each with a private bath) of this towered three-story house overlooking the town. 605-745-4633.

Mount Rushmore, Palmer Gulch Lodge/Mount Rushmore KOA The romance of the Old West lives on at this rolling, 145-acre resort at the foot of craggy Harney Peak, the highest point east of the Rockies. Thirty cabins range from rustic (no carpet, combination kitchen-living areas) to modern (polished wood floors and kitchens). All have wood-burning stoves. You also can camp, park your recreational vehicle, stay in a Kamping Kabin or bed down in the 60-room lodge. 800-233-4331.

Rapid City, Alex Johnson Hotel Settle into this dramatic Tudor-style hotel, where you can enjoy the lobby's riverstone fireplace and 143 spacious rooms. 800-888-2539.

Rapid City, The Flying B Ranch Surrounded by rolling cattle country, this modern cedar home features three family-size suites each named after a band of horse thieves that roamed the area years ago. 605-342-5324.

Spearfish Canyon, Spearfish Canyon Lodge Sheer rock walls shelter this new 55-room stone-and-log lodge in South Dakota's Black Hills. Telephone-pole-size timbers support the roof in the spacious lobby, where a river-rock fireplace soars two stories. 800-439-8544.

Wall, Shearer's Western Dakota Ranch Vacations Guests at the ranch can choose to stay in a rustic cabin or a bunkhouse. You can fish, ride horses, or take a covered-wagon ride, with a hearty chuckwagon style supper. 605-279-2198.
