Nebraska Lodgings

Plan for pleasant peace and quiet when staying at one of these great getaways.

The following resorts, inns and bed-and-breakfasts were featured in recent issues of Midwest Living. Because packages are always being introduced and altered, you might want to call the property first.

Brewster, Sandhills Guest Ranch Visitors to Nebraska's scenic sandhills country overnight in the six-single-bed Bunkhouse or the Hideout, a three-room cabin. 308-547-2460.

Elgin, Plantation House Bed and Breakfast When George Seymour, the first banker in Elgin, expanded his family home in 1916, he added four massive pillars to the front of the sprawling white mansion as a reminder of his southern-style boyhood. The original oak staircase spirals to the second floor and the five guest rooms. Those seeking more privacy can stay in a cozy 1917 cottage that is also on the premises. 402-843-2287.

Gordon, Meadow View Ranch Shut off your car engine and the only sounds you hear are meadowlarks singing and wind whirring though the blades of the ranch windmill. Guests stay in the renovated bunkhouse, which includes a kitchen and plenty of room to spread out. 308-282-0679.

Nebraska City, Arbor Day Farm, Lied Lodge and Conference Center Mention "conference center," and most people picture a business meeting. But this 260-acre complex in an old Missouri River town, dedicated to environmental programs, is more fun than brainstorming. Facilities in the three-story, 144-room log-and-stone masterpiece include an Olympic-size indoor pool, a restaurant, and an exercise room, along with hiking trails. 800-546-5433.

Omaha, Best Western Redick Plaza Hotel This brick Art Deco edifice, a 1930s office building reopened as a hotel in 1987, is near the shops and restaurants of downtown's Old Market District. 888-342-5339.

Omaha, The Sheraton Omaha Hotel Just a short walk from the Old Market, this four-story limestone hotel specializes in the charm of old Italy. 402-342-2222.

Wilber, Hotel Wilber Located in a city of Nebraska known as, "The Czech Capital of the U.S.," the decor of this two-story brick hotel shows pride in its roots. Fourteen guest rooms (with shared baths) feature lace curtains, brass beds, quilts, and original polished woodwork. 888-332-1937.
