French Lick, Patoka Lake Village A dozen rustic log cabins cluster on a hill, 10 miles south of French Lick in southwest Indiana. You can boat and fish in nearby Patoka Lake, where the shore is mostly undeveloped, and stroll in the woods. Or have the catch of the day off the 158-foot floating fishing pier. 888-324-5350.

Goshen, The Checkerberry Inn When Goshen natives John and Susan Graff built The Checkerberry over 10 years ago, they combined the intimacy of a European country inn with the simplicity of the rural Indiana countryside. You can experience this cozy atmosphere in one of 13 guest rooms. 574-642-4445.

Greencastle, Commercial House Bed & Breakfast This unique renovated brick warehouse offers four rooms with private baths. Built by Mongomery Ward in the 1930's, the building was renovated into a cozy B&B in the 1990's. 765-653-6579.

Greencastle, Walden Inn Echoing the back-to-nature writings of Henry David Thoreau, the sprawling 50-room Walden Inn combines warm, simple furnishings with top-notch dining and pampering service. Indianapolis, Canterbury Hotel After years of decline, the gleam is back on the brass doors of this landmark 12-story red brick inn. Guests choose from 99 spacious rooms and suites. Indianapolis, The Villa This Itailian-style estate offers a lot more than a bed and breakfast. Its six rooms are each decorated with a distinctive theme and have a private bath and Whirlpool. Middlebury, Varn's Guest House Jan and Lanny Kimes own the green-trimmed three-story home, which previous owner Diane Eash renovated into a bed and breakfast. Mementoes of Diane's family history in this Amish-country town decorate the five guest rooms, each with a private bath. New Harmony, The New Harmony Inn Simple Shaker furniture and a relaxing yard with a picket fence are remnants of the utopian society founded by German Lutheran settlers in this area. The red brick inn was designed to resemble the society's communal buildings and spirit. 800-782-8605.
