Midwest Living Review

Need a break from Kansas steak? Check out YaYa's inventive menu.

Traveling in Kansas means a steady diet of traditionally prepared staples such as steak, burgers, pork and chicken. Nobody complains about a good steak in cattle country, but if you're ready to mix up the menu, try YaYa's, a regular winner of various "best of" awards on the Wichita restaurant scene. The Wichita restaurant (part of a small chain stretching from Arkansas to Colorado) is located in a mall in the northeast part of the city. The atmosphere is upscale casual, with stacked limestone pillars, tile mosaics, a wood-fired pizza oven and one of those bars where the liquor bottles become objects of attention. Booths are deep and comfy, and there's outdoor seating during warm months. In addition to the wood-fired pizzas, the menu features an array of urban tastes that provide a welcome new flavor in a rural state. Appetizers include bruschetta, calamari, ravioli and asparagus-goat cheese fondue. Sandwiches each get enough twist to make them interesting. The chicken sandwich features rosemary, argula and lemon mayo. The shaved pork includes pickled onions and gazpacho aioli. Main entrees include several fresh fish options such as sea scallops, Idaho rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon. On our visit, we enjoyed summer corn risotto topped with prawns, a light but filling dish perfect for a warm late-spring afternoon.
