Midwest Living Review

Richelle Tremaine
This curbside classic a few blocks west of the capitol has been serving up burgers, coneys, shakes and memories since 1953.

A corner landmark, Bobo's looks every bit the part of an American drive-in, complete with carhops who come your way after seeing a flicker of the headlights. Stay outside and enjoy window-side service, or head inside to claim one of the Formica-topped, mauve-seated booths, or a stool at the horseshoe-shaped bar. The all-American steakburger that we ordered was served up hot off the grill, wrapped in white paper to help hold in the heat, and our attentive waitress promptly brought the meal to the table. The burgers were made of ground sirloin, formed by hand, in generous patties about a half-inch thick. The meat was seared to perfection, crisp on the outside, moist on the inside. An order of splendid onion rings, a specialty of the house, was the perfect embellishment to the classic burger. For sweets, the malts are highly recommended, but the apple pie wasn't really worth the extra calories. A meal here comes with the chance to suddenly become enveloped by the spit-polished vehicles of a classic car club, a crowd of high-school reunion pals or a suit-and-tie gaggle of state legislators. It's the perfect stop for both fans of nostalgia and those who love a classic American hamburger. And with prices like these the classic steakburger is $1.99, a cheeseburger is $2.39, and the specialty, a double cheeseburger, is $3.29 the experience is a great deal.
